Chong Wei tunai misi

Pemain China turut menguasai acara beregu wanita apabila gandingan Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang menewaskan beregu tuan rumah, Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati 21-12, 21-10.
Indonesia terus kempunan meraih kejuaraan di bumi sendiri apabila gandingan Ahmad Tantowi-Liliyana Natsir tewas kepada beregu China, Zhang Nan-Zhoa Yunlei 22-20, 14-21, 9-21 dalam acara beregu campuran.

Chong Wei buka langkah kanan

CHONG WEI memburu gelaran juara buat kali ketiga pada Terbuka Indonesia 2011.

JAGUH negara, Datuk Lee Chong Wei meminta para peminat Indonesia supaya menyokongnya dalam misinya merangkul gelaran juara perseorangan lelaki Kejohanan Badminton Terbuka Indonesia buat kali ketiga berturut-turut.
Sementara itu, beregu utama wanita negara, Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui turut melepasi halangan pusingan pertama selepas menewaskan pasangan Denmark, Line Damkjaer Kruse/Marie Roepke 21-18, 24-22.
Beregu muda lelaki negara, Gan Teck Chai/Tan Bin Shen pula tersingkir awal apabila tewas 10-21, 19-21 kepada gandingan Jepun, Naoki Kawamae/Shoji Sato.
Mohd. Zakry Abdul Latiff/Hoon Thien How tewas di tangan pasangan Indonesia Ahsan Mohammad/Septano Bona 15-21, 17-21.
Perseorangan lelaki negara, Liew Daren gagal mencipta kejutan apabila tewas, 28-30, 23-21, 12-21 kepada Taufik Hidayat.

Singapore Open: Jeers for Chinese superstar Lin Dan as he concedes another walkover

The boos from the fans at the Singapore Open said it all yesterday.
Three-time world champion Lin Dan of China pulled off his antics once again when he conceded a walkover to compatriot Chen Jin in the men’s singles final to the disappointment of the fans – both at the stadium and also at homes all over the world.
It was the fourth time that Lin Dan had staged similar walkouts in his last seven international tournaments. He gave walkovers for various reasons at the 2010 China Open and Hong Kong Open and the 2011 Malaysian Open – all at the quarter-final stages.
The 28-year-old Lin Dan did turn up on the playing arena and apologised to the fans, citing that he was ill but the spectators, who had purchased tickets to watch him play, were not too happy with the turn of events.
As a consolation and to appease the home crowd, he threw three autographed memorabilia to the fans.

Lin Dan, as stated in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website, said: “I had a tough match against Peter(Gade Christensen of Denmark during the semi-final) and drank too much cold water. I went to bed not feeling too good and in the morning consulted the team doctor. I was diagnosed as having gastroenteritis and was advised not to play. I am sorry for the fans who came to watch me play and I apologise.”
Now, there are fears that he may do the same thing at next week’s Premier Super Series – the Indonesia Open.
Barring any upsets, the second seeded Lin Dan is tipped to meet world number one Lee Chong Wei in the final. The probable match-up was expected to be a perfect prelude before the players converge again at the World Championships, which will be held in London from Aug 8-14.
National coach Rashid Sidek said that Lin Dan’s action did not augur well for the sport.
“We (the badminton family) are trying to promote the game but Lin Dan’s walkover in the final does not help. It is unsportsmanlike,” said Rashid.
“Yes, he has his own reasons (being sick) but he has done this too often and it is quite difficult to believe the authenticity of it. And this always happens when the match involves two Chinese players. Lin Dan’s walkover will benefit Chen Jin in his bid to qualify for next year’s London Olympic Games.
A country can have a maximum of three players at the London Olympic Games if all of them are ranked in the top four bracket in the world and mighty China are trying to achieve that.
Currently, Lin Dan and Chen Long are ranked second and fourth while Chen Jin has dropped to 10th after his failure to win any titles since emerging as the world champion in Paris last year.
Said Rashid : “Let us hope that Lin Dan will be in good shape at the Indonesia Open. Fans want to see good badminton and not be subjected to constant walkovers.”
The BWF had made it compulsory for all the top 10 players to be present during the Premier Super Series event. Even if they are injured (unless bedridden), the players have to show up during the competition – to at least participate in autograph sessions with the fans.
Other than the anti-climax of Lin Dan and Chen Jin’s match, it was a great day for China when they swept three other titles in Singapore except for the mixed doubles. Indonesia went back home with one title through Tantowi Ahmad-Lilyana Natsir, who defeated Chen Hung-ling-Cheng Wen-hsing of Taiwan 21-14, 27-25.

Lin Dan’s chance to surpass Chong Wei

Arguably the best player in badminton history, Olympic and Asian champion Lin Dan has the opportunity to put one over his long-time rival Lee Chong Wei in the Li Ning Singapore Open Superseries.
Taufik Hidayat semis04The Chinese superstar, who is the second seed in the tournament behind Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat (right), hopes to capture a title he has never won before.
The three-time world champion also knows that if he qualifies for the quarter-finals, he will replace Chong Wei – who is skipping the tournament – as the No. 1 ranked player in the OSIM BWF World Superseries rankings.
The Malaysian, who is known as the ‘King of the Superseries’ for winning 18 Superseries titles since 2007, has dominated the rankings since the start of the Superseries four years ago.
He, however, is skipping the Singapore leg as his main priority this year is the BWF World Championships in London this coming August.
This has opened the door for Lin Dan, who has accumulated 25,390 points in the OSIM Standings, to lie second behind Chong Wei, who has 29,550 points.
To add more spice to the tournament, the Li Ning Singapore Open Superseries is also the first Superseries in the Olympic qualifying period which began on May 1.
Lin Dan will began his campaign in Singapore with a match against South Korea’s Shon Wan Ho. If, as expected he wins, he will face a daunting second round tie against either Denamrk’s Jan O Jorgensen or Japan’s Kenichi Tago.
Taufik, who triumphed in Singapore in 2001 and 2005, takes on Malaysian qualifier Liew Daren, who stunned compatriot and former All England champion Hafiz Hashim in the qualifying round on Tuesday.
The tie of the first round, however, could be the meeting between defending champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia and 2009 champion Bao Chunlai of China.
The winner will face either Malaysian veteran Wong Choong Hann or world junipr champion Victor Axelsen. Choong Han defeated the Dane in straight games in Thailand a week ago.
Saina NehwalDefending champion Saina Nehwal of India (left), will also face a familiar opponent, taking on 2009 world champion Lu Lan in a repeat of last week’s first round tie in Bangkok. The Commonwealth Games champion was made to struggle before beating the Chinese ace in three games a week ago.
The main story, however, is which of China’s top three women –Wang Shixian, Wang Yihan and Wang Xin – can help themselves to the title.
Wang Shixian won the Proton Malaysia Open Superseries and the Yonex All England Open Superseries Premier while Wang Yihan took home the Victor Korean Open Superseries Premier crown.
Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk is the only female singles player to win a Superseries crown this season when she won in India, but that was partly because the Chinese players skipped the event.

Singapore Open: Pairs out to prove themselves

Tan Wee Kiong (left) and Mak Hee Chun could use the tournament to patch up their differences.
Tan Wee Kiong (left) and Mak Hee Chun could use the tournament to patch up their differences.
SEVERAL doubles pairs and veteran singles player Wong Choon Hann will use the Singapore Open, which begins today, to boost their standings with the BA of Malaysia (BAM).
Professional doubles pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, who were left out of the World Championships by the BAM despite having qualified on merit, will want to prove a point by doing well in the Super Series event.

Teik Chai-Bin Shen, after an easy opener against Adam Cwalina-Michal Logosz of Poland, must overcome possible second round rivals Chai Biao-Guo Zhendong of China to prove that BAM had indeed made a mistake in omitting them from the World Championships.
Should they advance, Teik Chai-Bin Shen face yet another tough hurdle in third seeds Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea in the last eight.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen must make a strong statement in this Super Series event in order not to be sidelined for future major events.

Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock, who were also overlooked by BAM who opted for Zakry Latif-Hoon Thien How instead, can also continue their progress and improve their current World No 19 ranking.
There is every possibility that Fairuz-Soon Hock could meet fast improving compatriots Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah in the first round.

Wei Shem-Khim Wah will be playing in the qualifying rounds today and should make the main draw.

Troubled combination Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong must use the event to bury their differences and try to qualify for the main draw.
They must get past Rendy Sugiarto-Afiat Yuris Wirawan of Indonesia and Hong Wei-Shen Ye of China to make the tournament proper.

Choong Hann has yet to get past the first round in the Super Series but the veteran gets his best chance in Singapore as he opens against a qualifier, who is expected to be either Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland or Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.

A win will pit Choong Hann against either Bao Chunlai of China or Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro where he will be out to prove that he is not in Singapore to make up the numbers.

Two other Malaysians will be playing in the qualifying rounds where Hafiz Hashim takes on Ajay Jayram of India while Liew Daren meets Dicky Palyama of the Netherlands.

They will play each other for a place in the main draw if they win their matches.

Badminton: World's best shuttlers face-off at Li-Ning Singapore Open

SINGAPORE: This year's Li-Ning Singapore Open has attracted some of the world's best shuttlers mainly because ranking points for Olympic qualification are at stake.

Big names competing include Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan from China and India's top women shuttler Saina Nehwal. But Malaysia's world number one male player, Lee Chong Wei is giving the Singapore event a miss.

It was a good 2010 for India's Saina Nehwal, who won three Super Series titles, including the Li-Ning Singapore Open women's singles event.

She is back to defend her title and the world number four said she is expecting a stiff challenge from Chinese players.

She said: "I am really working on my strokes, little bit more on my movement, so that I move faster against them. Because (at any point should) you move slower or you take it easy, you will lose the match. So I need to be very quick on the courts, so I am working on that speed and a lot of my strokes."

Defending men's singles champion, Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia and China's Lin Dan did not show up for the media conference on Monday. No reason was given for the Indonesian's no show, while Lin Dan cited a stomach upset for giving the media session a miss.

Last year's losing finalist in the men's singles, Boonsak Ponsana, agrees with Nehwal about the tougher competition this year. The Thai, who won the Singapore singles title in 2007, also thinks the prize money can be better to promote the sport.

Veteran Danish shuttler Peter Gade agreed and added that the Badminton World Federation can learn from the success of the Chinese.

He said: "The BWF's job is to transfer what they see and what they do with the Chinese in China to other countries. You have a huge interest for badminton. When we play in almost every country, if you have the right players, all the best players, a lot of spectators. So it should be possible."

Host Singapore's best chance lies with the women's doubles pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei, who are the defending champions.

With a stellar line-up of players competing this year, organisers are expecting more fans to show up. Already all 4,000 season tickets and 90 per cent of the premier seats have been sold out, even before the competition starts on Tuesday.
