Malaysia naib juara Kumpulan B

Perjuangan skuad negara berakhir selepas beregu campuran, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying turut kecundang ditangan Fran Kurniawan Teng/Pia Zebadiah Bernadet 18-21, 15-21.
Begitupun, selaku naib juara, Malaysia layak ke peringkat suku akhir.

The Sudirman Cup - the World Team Championships - is held every two years and is one of the most prestigious titles for badminton. It is also the only BWF world event for men and women competing together in national teams.
The event was first hosted in 1989 with 28 national teams. It now attracts more than 50 national teams. Only three nations have won the Sudirman Cup since its inception - Indonesia (1 - once), Korea (3 times) and China (6 times).
Sudirman cup
Brief History
The first Sudirman Cup tournament was played in Indonesia in 1989 and it became a biennial event with the first few competitions staged in conjunction with the World Championships.
The idea of a mixed team event first came up during IBF Council meetings in 1986 and by 1988 the IBF had accepted and approved the regulations for the competition to be staged in conjunction with the World Individual Championships.
The IBF accepted from the Badminton Association of Indonesia, a memorial to the late Dick Sudirman in the form of a cup to be known as the 'Sudirman Cup' and to be presented to the winners of the World Mixed Team Championship. Dick Sudirman, as well as being a long-serving member of IBF Council, first as a Councilor and then Vice-President, was known as the father of Indonesian badminton and was a champion player in his own right. He was a founder of Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia (PBSI - The Badminton Association of Indonesia) and served as its President for 22 years.
By the 8th Sudirman Cup in the Netherlands (2003), the event had grown sufficiently in world stature for it to become a stand-alone tournament in the world badminton calendar.

Sudirman Cup: Back-ups must emulate Chong Wei

THE Sudirman Cup, which begins in Qingdao, China today, is not a major worry for national singles coach Rashid Sidek but the declining standards of Malaysian back-up players compared to rivals China and Indonesia, is.
Rashid, yesterday preparing the players for the Sudirman Cup, lamented on the negative attitude shown by back-up shuttlers who don't try hard enough to follow the footsteps of World No 1 Lee Chong Wei.

Rashid said the other countries face the same problem but their back-up players are much better and he is concerned about the bleak future after Chong Wei retires.
"If you look at all the other countries, they are also suffering like Malaysia in the sense that their current top players such as Lin Dan in China and Taufik Hidayat in Indonesia are superior to the back-up or second ranked players.
"The difference is, the back-up players in those countries are consistently beating our back-up players," said Rashid.

"This is very worrying indeed and I hope our players look to Chong Wei as a source of inspiration. Some of the back-up players need to change their attitude and thinking as they are lagging behind Chong Wei.
"This is something we must address and I hope the players realise that if they want to succeed, they have to work harder then they are doing now.

"He (Chong Wei) has shown that a Malaysian can survive being at the top of the world rankings for a long time and consistently win big tournaments. Now it is up to them to emulate his feats."

Malaysia will be heavily dependent on Chong Wei in the Sudirman Cup as back-up shuttler Chong Wei Feng doesn't stand a chance against others.
Malaysia may not even take the risk of fielding him against Russia as they must secure the tie tomorrow in Group B to qualify for the quarter-finals.

It will get tougher against Indonesia as Chong Wei is the only one who can beat Simon Santoso to confirm a point in the tie on Wednesday. Should Malaysia beat both Russia and Indonesia, they will be in a better position to reach the semi-finals.

This is because Malaysia can avoid meeting top seeds China, South Korea or Japan in the quarter-finals if they can top Group B.

Should they lose to Indonesia, they may even face China in the quarter-finals and that will be the end of the road for the Malaysia who reached the semi-finals in Guangzhou two years ago.

Meanwhile, Russian team manager Stepin Maxim has already conceded beating Malaysia or Indonesia but he sees badminton has a great future in his country as the sport will soon be part of the schooling education system as one of the main curriculum activities.

"The sport is growing and we have more and more youngsters taking up badminton back in Russia. It may not be as popular as tennis is at the moment, but given time, I'm sure badminton will be just as welcome around the country," said Maxim

"The game received a big boost when we qualified for Group 1 of this year's Sudirman Cup. I'm confident it will continue to grow, especially with the latest incentives put into place to teach schoolchildren badminton.

"Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova helped glamorise tennis as they are very beautiful. Russian badminton players are also not bad looking so that is good," added Maxim with a laugh.

"That could help with the game's popularity."

"We are placed last out of the 12 teams in the top tier. As such, we have to be realistic about our chances. Obviously, we know it won't be easy to beat either Indonesia or Malaysia but we will try our best and a lot will depend on our women players."

Team like Russia have started making huge strides and Malaysia wouldn't want to be in a situation where some of national back-up shuttlers start losing to their players in future.

Zakry vows to achieve best results with Hoon

Doubles shuttler Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif is getting a shot by default to represent Malaysia at the world championships.
And he has vowed to achieve his best results with Hoon Thien How to repay the faith the coaches have in them for the championships, which will be held in London from Aug 8-14.
The world No. 27 ranked pair did not make the cut for the championships at the end of the qualifying period. But the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in a controversial move selected them at the expense of former national shuttlers Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.
The coaches felt that Zakry-Thien How will have the better chance of making their presence felt compared to the Apac and KLRC-sponsored pair.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen qualified on merit as the second Malaysian pair among the top 24 qualifiers to compete in the championships after Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
“It was really a big surprise for me when I found out that Hoon and I have been selected for the world meet. I had already given up hope and was pondering over my future plans with Thien How,” said Zakry.
“Coach (Rexy Mainaky) confirmed that Thien How and I will be going. We now have to go all out to do our best to justify the faith that the coaches have in us.”
Zakry’s best outing in the world championships was a semi-final finish with former partner Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari in Hyderabad in 2009.
“I competed twice with Fairuzizuan (2007 in Kuala Lumpur and 2009 in Hyderabad) and we did well in India. We fought well before going down to the Chinese pair (Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng). This will be my first outing in the championships with Thien How and we hope to go as far as possible,” he said.
Zakry teamed up with Thien How last September when his partnership with Fairuzizuan hit a plateau after the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur.
“It took us some time to hit it off. But we are playing better now. Our problem is our weak finish towards the end of a match. We tend to make mistakes in our haste to win,” he said.
This was evident when Zakry-Thien How were levelled 19-19 against Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the quarter-finals of the All-England in March. The Malaysians buckled while the Danes went on to win their maiden All-England title.
“Thien How and I are determined not this waste this opportunity to prove ourselves in the world championships. We are bound to meet seeded players in the early round and we will be ready for them,” said Zakry.
